We are delighted to share with you the wonderful films made by our 3 winning companies. These films work as a trailer for the work they were developing as part of the BOLD MAKERS Award (more details below*) and were filmed by Will Hazell. Enjoy.
mandla on BOLDMakers:
“THOUGHTFUL, COURAGEOUS, EXPERIMENTAL”
“The support from the BOLD team in access workshops was also incredible, it was great to connect with the facilitators and I felt really supported by the BOLD Associates during the week as well as the sessions provided with my mentor in throwing ideas around and being able to chat about what’s going on in my head – as a solo practitioner it can get really lonely aha. The residency has been really influential in my thinking of where I want my work to sit and thinking outside of the traditional Black Box. I also really loved the element of making a short piece to film which will be really helpful in the development of the piece and sending it to funders/commissioners in the future. I really appreciate the thought, time and care that went into all elements of the residency and I hope this opportunity will be made possible for future makers.”
Emergency Chorus on BOLDMakers:
“BUZZING, FRIENDLY, GROWTH”
“..best bit was being told to be DIY, hack it, make things accessible in fun & different ways. We’re going to open-caption our new show (plus our old touring show this Autumn) & look into building audio description into the new show as well.”
Calico on BOLDMakers:
“EXCITING, INSPIRING, MOTIVATING”
“BOLD Makers was a unique, amazing opportunity to take time to play and explore our ideas in a supportive and nurturing environment, with no deadlines or expectations. It really felt like the space was ours for the week, and that we weren’t guests, which really helped us to feel confident and settled throughout the week…Having an Artist for Change in the building was really useful. Like the BOLD Associates team, it was great to know that the Artist for Change was there and able to help us when we wanted/needed it.”
*What is the BOLDMakers Award?
In March, our winning companies of our inaugural BOLD Makers Award came to the BOLD building to create for a week and work on a new piece of theatre. This award was set in motion to celebrate theatre devisers and collaborators.
Each Company received: £1000; 1 week of rehearsal space with potential for a sharing; A short film created with videographer Will Hazell; A Disability Equality training workshop with John Kelly; A workshop on embedding access creatively into a project with Ben Wilson; and support from Hannah Quigley (BOLD’s Artist for Change); Sessions with a mentor who specialised in the relevant field were also spread over & beyond the scheme. For 2023 this was Ray Young, Nigel & Louise and Figs in Wigs. Huge thanks to all our collaborators and a beautiful positive week of making.
**This scheme was made possible by what we do in the building. We are unfunded. 100% of BOLD’s profits goes into supporting theatre freelancers and independent companies with space, mentoring, workshops, schemes and more. We also produce BOLD shows where all freelance creatives are paid above Equity.
